Graduate Programs
Food Science Graduate Faculty. The Food Science faculty, as well as affiliated faculty from other deparments, have varied research interests and many of them accept graduate students into their program.
Students with satisfactory undergraduate training in fields such as food science, dairy science, chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, microbiology, or any biological science will have a suitable background for graduate studies in this department. Individuals obtaining advanced degrees in food science will find employment opportunities in academic teaching and research; governmental research or regulatory activities; industrial research, development, processing, quality assurance, consumer service, and sales; and in industrial or institutional management positions requiring a high level of scientific training.
UW-Madison Graduate School
Admission to the graduate program begins with acceptance into the UW Madison graduate school. On-line admissions applications and detailed information about UW-Madison are available from the Graduate School. Contact us with any admission questions at (608) 262-3046 or foodsci@wisc.edu. The most current information on our courses, faculty, and admission procedures (including the University's electronic application form) is located on this site. As of October 15th, 2003, the Graduate School will not accept paper applications, so we will no longer send application packets or information by mail.
Note to International Students
Prior to your applying for admission, we would like to emphasize the following: In a typical year, 100 individuals might apply to our department. On average, about 15 of those 100 applicants are chosen as graduate students. The majority of these students are U.S. citizens or international students who have performed undergraduate or Masters degree studies at a U.S. or English-speaking institution. Due to the very high quality of applicants, the competition for the few openings is very intense and many highly qualified individuals are turned away each semester.
If your scores, particularly the TOEFL, are under the required level, it is not advisable for you to apply. There is a $56 fee required with all applications. There are no exceptions to this fee requirement.
