The vast majority of human gut bacteria belong to the gram-positive Firmicutes and gram-negative Bacteroidetes families, all of which are predicted to synthesize c-di-AMP. While c-di-AMP has been studied predominantly in Firmicutes, its roles in Bacteroidetes are largely unknown. Just like other bacteria, Bacteroides species require c-di-AMP for growth. We currently investigate the essentiality of c-di-AMP for growth and gut colonization by these bacteria, using Bacteroides species as a model.
