Tests and Paperwork
The Graduate Record Examination, general test, is a department requirement. Send your official scores to the Graduate School. Use institution code R-1846-5 and department code 0107. The department requires GRE scores of 500 on the verbal section, 600 on the quantitative section, and 60% on the analytical section. In accordance with the Education Testing Service policy, test scores are valid for up to five years. Special considerations are necessary when evaluating scores older than five years and permission to use older scores must be obtained from the Department of Food Science.
The Graduate School at the University of Wisconsin-Madison requires a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0. Please send one copy of original transcripts of your complete academic record to the Department of Food Science.
Also required are three letters of recommendation. We suggest that you ask three professors or industry supervisors who are well acquainted with your work to write letters of recommendation on your behalf. The letters should be sent directly to the Department of Food Science.
Language
Every international applicant whose native tongue is not English is required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) unless they have attended at least two semesters in an English speaking college or university. Official scores should be sent to the Graduate School. The Department of Food Science requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or a MELAB score of 85. If your score is 550-580/213-237 (TOEFL) or 85-90 (MELAB), you must take an English proficiency examination in Madison before classes begin to determine if there will be a course load restriction and if English courses will be required. Food Science uses the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Information on test dates, fees, and arrangements may be obtained from the Office of Testing & Evaluation, 366 Educational Sciences Building, Madison, WI 53706, (608) 262-5863.
