Tenure-track Assistant Professor and Food Processing Extension Specialist
in the Department of Food Science and College of Agricultural & Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Position Description: We invite applications for this 75% extension / 25% research position (12-month appointment) in the area of Sustainable Food Processing Systems, the improvement of food processing efficiency through technology. This area is of long-term strategic importance to the Department, the College and the UW-Madison campus. The successful candidate’s program should emphasize dairy products and other foods; areas may include separation and fermentation processes, development of uses for high-value by-products and ingredients, improving the efficiency and sustainability of processing energy systems, waste treatment and reclamation, and development of sustainable high-value niche processing operations. Excellent opportunities for multi-disciplinary extension and research exist through the Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research, the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, the Food Research Institute, and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. The Department of Food Science houses state-of-the-art pilot plant facilities for extension and research use.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to: 1) develop an extension program that emphasizes on-site short-courses, and may also include applied problem-solving, development of web-based resources, and plant-level assistance to industry clients; 2) obtain competitive federal and industry funding to support a vibrant research program that involves mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students; 3) have research expertise that, while not limited to dairy products, supports new and existing dairy food extension programming; 4) support the department’s instructional program; and 5) contribute to faculty governance at the Department, College, and University levels.
Requirements: Required qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in Food Science or closely related field, research or industrial experience in dairy and/or other food processing systems, and strong communication skills. Preferred qualifications include significant post-doctoral experience in academia or industry.
